Like most people, I use Gmail every day. After writing an email, I often copy and paste it into a language model for proofreading or to find a more succinct way to convey my thoughts. Despite Google owning both the leading AI model, Gemini, and Gmail, they haven’t integrated these services for over a year.

Yesterday, during Apple’s WWDC, they announced new features that allow emails and notes to be rewritten, proofread, and summarized with improved wording and style. Additionally, their Smart Reply feature offers context-based response suggestions and manages notifications by prioritizing some and hiding others.

Apple is strategically ensuring that its customers remain within its ecosystem, reducing the need to pay for services from other companies.

This approach not only enhances customer loyalty but also opens up opportunities for upselling its services. Currently, Apple Intelligence might be free to compete with the surge of language models, but advanced features will likely be placed behind a paywall in the future. By partnering with ChatGPT-4, Apple provides even more reasons for users to stay within its ecosystem. This integration aligns with Apple’s broader strategy of creating a seamless and comprehensive user experience, making it less appealing for customers to switch to other platforms.
