Netflix Inc.’s foray into live sports streaming with the boxing match between Mike Tyson and Jake Paul drew a massive global audience that peaked at 65 million viewers but resulted in thousands of complaints from viewers about connection problems and frozen screens. “We crashed the site,” said Paul, 27, after claiming victory over the 58-year-old Tyson. “This is the biggest event.”From Bloomberg

So, what’s the strategy?

Netflix, traditionally recognized as a premier destination for movies and television series, has recently made a strategic pivot by venturing into the sports streaming arena, starting with boxing events. This expansion into live sports is a calculated move designed to attract a broader audience and capture a larger share of the entertainment market. In the United States, where Netflix already serves 22% of households, the company aims to deepen its market penetration and enhance its competitive positioning.

The strategy leverages two fundamental drivers of revenue growth: increasing the number of subscribers and boosting the average revenue per user (ARPU). By diversifying its content portfolio to include sports, Netflix seeks to entice new segments of consumers — specifically sports enthusiasts — thereby expanding its subscriber base. This approach addresses the first revenue lever by aiming to increase the total number of users on the platform.
